Now I dont wish to be a negative nancy, and I’ve tried not to be critical of this film. I’ve thought about it for a day and a night and a day. This is my most favorite musical. I saw it on broadway, not knowing exactly what it was for I was a naive 17 year old who liked doing theater. It blew my mind. I was so affected. I went out and bought the soundtrack and it has been my companion over many a road trip.
So….
When the flood gates of awe inspiring comments opened on Facebook, I began to push myself to see the movie. Finally, out of seeming obligation I flopped my carcass in a theater chair the day after Christmas.
I didnt know exactly what to expect, but I had high hopes. I thought the concept was interesting, letting the actors sing their parts live for each take and adding accompaniment later. This has been done one time before, do not be fooled by the hype. Its almost revolutionary. (no pun intended)

Les Miserables is taken from a large historical novel by Victor Hugo, considered to be one of the greatest books of its time. The book was then adapted for the stage and turned in to something that closely resembles an operetta by Claude-Michel Schönberg and translated to english by Herbert Kretzmer. It follows the story of Jean val Jean played by Hugh Jackman as he tries to redeem and recover his lost life in prison. He accepts that he must turn to God for redemption. He skips parole and the local police inspector Javier constantly pursues him played by Russell Crowe.

Well, theres a lot to explain, and Im not going to except for the fact that Jean val Jean meets Fantine who has been forced in to prostitution to make money for her daughter Cosette. After Cosette grows up in Jean val Jeans care (because Fantine dies shortly after being taken to a hospital) she falls in love with Monsieur Marius, who is ignoring the adorations of Eponine (my favorite name in the show.)

And theres a french revolution in there somewhere.

Let me just say a few things for this is already too long for my liking… It was about 50/50 for me. I thought the singing was interesting. I didn’t hate on Russell because his character is kind of the odd ball out anyways, so it suited him. Hugh did a great job, and Anne Hatheway as Fantine tore up her solo of I dreamed a dream. Other performances that were noteworthy were Hillary Bonham Carter as the Innkeepers wife and Amanda Seyfried as Cosette.
What became wearisome was the freaking close ups on the actors all day long. I wanted to see more of the grand scope of things. There werent many wide shots that I could recall, and the lens selection was like looking at the movie through a peep hole on a door. The group numbers were overall pretty awkward and it was clear that Tom Hooper, the director who won an oscar for The Kings Speech, was in over his head when it came to staging. As a friend put it “The direction left a lot to be desired.” I became bored about an hour in.

A note about the script: I just think this is a stage play and you shouldn’t put it on the screen. Its a vignette piece, meant to give you impressions. The opening number wasn’t very powerful, at least for me.

So, this was a good try but it felt non cohesive and sloppy to me. Maybe even lazy. I expected to see and absorb more.

Dont take kids under 18, unless you want to expose them to seeing jolly old St Nick getting his jollies with a prostitute. Very adult themes, very unforgiving at times. Maybe go see it, maybe dont.

Stephen Spielberg is at it again, with a big blockbuster yet not so blockbusting historical dramedy Lincoln. Based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s biography of Lincoln, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, and covers the final four months of Lincoln’s life.

The plot is invigorating with American spirit. The rhetoric endearing, the analogies delightful. All elements are in place for a great historical storytelling by a master storyteller and his cohorts. Daniel Day Lewis is one of my favorite actors. My favorite role of his is in There Will be Blood. Such an interesting character. I really enjoyed his portrayal of the kind, humble, deeply thoughtful Abraham Lincoln, and Sally Field paired nicely against him. Tommy Lee Jones was great in the ensemble. As an actor, I felt intimidated just watching the casting choices.

While this will probably be a great movie with a good shelf life for years to come, there was something about it that didn’t quite work for me. After a couple of hours of contemplating I finally figured it out…

All the cast I knew from other movies or tv shows.

I didn’t get to truly suspend my belief because every time I blinked, there was another famous person playing a historical figure and my brain would say, look theres another famous person playing a historical figure. If you can get past that then bravo, but I couldn’t.

Also, do not eat a big meal beforehand or go to the theater sleepy, because you will doze off. (The guy in front of us fell asleep and was snoring very loud.)

My dad said there was language in the film, but I only found one scene with any cursing.
Good movie for the whole family except squirmy kids.
Go see!

A quick "review" of the movie The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games, based on the novel by Suzanne Collins, is… I dunno… ya know?
Im kind of aggravated with this movie, and I don’t want to set the wrong tone for those who want to see this movie (like anyone reads this blog anyway). Yesterday I was contemplating the pre bought ticked that was in my wallet for the midnight showing of The Hunger Games, and the thought occurred to me “You don’t have to see this movie. Because once you see this movie, your vision of what you read in the book will become marred for the rest of time.” I was also learry that this movie was coming out in March (a somewhat dumping ground for second rate movies) and was also on guard because of the director, Gary Ross, whom has only directed a few features, and non of them blockbuster caliber. Im not trying to be mean, nor am I wanting to to anyone involved with this movie… so here it goes.

Set in a future world, where our supposed section of the globe is now partitioned in to 13 districts, to quell violence and uprising, Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss Everdeen does a pretty good job with what she is given to act with the script, though I didn’t connect with her at all. I didn’t connect with the movie but once, and that was during the reaping, where the audience was actually allowed in to witness some displays of humanity. I felt alienated throughout the film, by the film.

Most scenes were horribly out of focus and shaky and while I understand that it is a camera style, it wasn’t a great choice for this. It just made things hard to watch.

And where was the freaking hunger??? It felt to me that they were so concerned about being true to the source material and covering all the major rocks, that there wasn’t room for anything else, besides content. Which made me wonder why they chose to skirt 2 or 3 big incidents and not be true to them. Hollywood: WE WANT MOVIES WITH HEART! SO START MAKING THEM!

You do not have to see this movie. It is not a must see. It is, however, very kid friendly (ironically with teenagers killing teenagers) which disappointed me as well. And you may be more interested in it if you have not read the books.

Then again, I dunno…

A Millquas Production original!
This is the first budgeted short film done by Millquas Productions. We had a kickstarter account that helped raise $500. The actors worked for free so they could get experience and footage for their reels.

I was really quite a challenge and very fun to try and make something so simple, yet it turned out to be complicated enough to give us some fits with the audio.

Commodity Premiered on January 15th in Taylorsville Utah to a crowd of about 20.
